Actually there were only 7 bayonet wounds inflicted during the whole Battle of the Wilderness which seems somewhat suprising do most fighting happening whithin 150 to 25 yards but many times soldiers never got into range to use the bayonet because the defenders would retreat then regroup and counter attack which this back and forth type of fighting happened allot at the Wilderness.

That sort of thing happened more than once during the CW. You combine dry vegetation with guns can cannons that spat flame [those were the days before "smokeless" gunpowder and enclosed cartridges] and tinder just lights up. The wounded who cannot escape suffer a horrible fate.

This is probably one of the best scenes of a Civil War battle because in reality Civil War battles weren't anything like what you were tought back in school. They were not men lining up in formations and shooting volleys back and forth. In real life they were bloody and chaotic, some of the most chaotic battles America has seen. Men fought whithin 50 to 100 feet of each other or closer and fougth in huge mobs under thick smoke and shot and shell flying everywhere; it was a field of living hell.

This is a very different type of battle than Gettysburg. it is alot of dense cover and CQB fighting with the bayonet. Was the woods set on fire at the end to cover the retreat ? Alot of wounded must have died that cold not walk. It must have been terrible.

Black regiments got killed too, like the Black regiment that stormed Fort Wagner is S.C, every single one was killed or taken prisoner, also at the battle of Olustee FL when an entire black regiment was killed by rebel skirmishers.
