It is an illness in the sense that your endorphids shouldn't go that low normally, not even if you're having some problems over money or something like that. Depression is not a thing that just happens for a day or so, it´s much more serious than that. You can have what some people would call a perfect life and yet be depressed because material objects don't have anything to do with it.

In your definition you can only catch an illness? Only if scientist would've know this, they could start developing immunisation against Diabetes, Asthma and other diseases so people would not catch them. :) Depression is a disease that mostly linked to the Serotonin, it's very similar to Diabetes in 'mechanics'. It is caused by a kind of chemical imbalance. If it would be linked to endorphins then all you need to cure it is chocolate and some wild sex :)

Depression is actually an illness. So I don't really think you can get depressed over money, Yea you can get sad and feel bad but that is in no way the same thing.

I turned 19 just over 2 weeks ago but prior to that which was for sometime a month ago I was feeling some depression, I couldn't even get rid of it due to my own personal and other kinds of reasons like things would never be the same, but these comments have made me realise what I was missing, I hadn't been listening to enough Opeth in a while, been a year since Heritage was announced and I was listening like mad, pumped for that album's release

yes, but that teenage depression is actually hormonal imbalances... it's not caused by anything like having to deal with money or other things, because that usually happens when you're around your 20's to 30's.. worrying about money.. that whole chest nut. good band though, really awesome. :)
