After a tough bidder battle starting at 200.000 Euro, lasting for 20 minutes, the highlight of the auction, the extremely rare Leica of the 0-series from 1923, sold for a staggering 1.320.000 Euro (USD 1.900.000) including premium. The bidder, a private collector from Asia, is with this buy the new owner of the most expensive camera ever sold worldwide. The camera is number 7 in a series of around 25 pieces built to test the market by Leitz in 1923. The camera has been manufactured two years before the official market launch of the Leica (Leitz Camera). It is the only known camera with the "Germany" gravure on the top plate. According to factory documents the camera was sent to New York to be patented, hence it is also the first exported Leica. The camera is now officially topping the last world record set by a Daguerreotype from 1839, up for auction at WestLicht in December of 2010 that had sold for 732.000 Euro (USD 1.054.000).

The legendary Konica HEXAR RF was the only other rangefinder camera that could be taken seriously in a world where Leica M's rule supreme. A true pleasure to use; intuitive design, solid build w/ Titanium top and bottom covers, AE exposure with AE lock, motorized film advance and rewind, a clear bright view finder w/ shutter speed display, and an electronic metal shutter with a wider shutter speed range. features that no Leica M had until the introduction of the Leica M7 in 2002. uses the SAME framelines combinations as Leica: 28+90, 50+75, 35+135 which are automatically selected when you mount the lens, and even uses the same type of frame preview lever in the same M location. Unable to get this camera serviced in the US I left it in the capable hands of the experts at Ginza Camera Shop in Tokyo, Japan, when I was there 6 months ago. It took 3 months and cost 30000 Yen (approx. US$300) to have a blinking 11 error code fixed, and have the camera cleaned and serviced, and rangefinder adjusted. It's like new again. Ridiculously happy to have it back. Money well spent to have this camera performing like a new shooter again.
